A small Northern Kentucky company is looking to make a huge impact when it comes to protecting our troops.
A former Navy pilot in Ft. Thomas has designed a new product used in barracks that can defend against most high-powered weapons.
"We feel confident this is the best product on the market to protect against high ordered explosives and armored piercing rounds," said Burke Herron, Chief Development Officer for Global Shelter Systems.
The product contains flexible panels composed of polymers and alloys designed to rapidly deploy and can easily be filled with gravel or stone.
"This is considered a high mobility wall something you can pull the pins out of, collapse, move and take to remote areas and all the pieces will fit in the back of a Humvee," said Herron.
Herron is a former Navy pilot with no engineering background but saw a need for better protection for the troops after serving overseas.
"So I thought I would try and transfer my talents and my experience in theatre with the literal birds eye view with something that was tangible to try and protect our troops," said Herron.
After securing several key partnerships, Herron and his wife Stephanie brought his idea to the marketplace after months of rigorous testing.
They provided a video that shows the protection BlastBloc provides against a 15,000-pound truck going 50 mph.
BlastBloc also protects against high-powered weapons.
The Herrons are now competing for high level military contracts.
If secured, they would bring new jobs and added revenue to the area.
"We really want to feel like what we are doing is benefiting where we live. We live here, our children go to school here and it only makes sense for us to help the economy here," said Stephanie Herron, CEO of Global Shelter Systems.
The Herrons will find out in February if they won the contracts.
Long term goals for the company include using the product for humanitarian efforts. |
